Postdoctoral Fellow in Optical Trapping of HIV : Ann Arbor, MI, United States

Job Description

A postdoctoral fellow position is available in Wei Cheng laboratory at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. We seek highly motivated and dedicated individuals to participate in the study of HIV-1 virions using the optical trapping virometry technique that we recently developed (Nature Nanotechnology 2014, 9: 624). As part of this position, the candidate is expected to use the state-of-the-art optical tweezers to characterize individual HIV-1 virions at single-particle and single-molecule level. Studies of this kind can directly offer implications on mechanisms of HIV infection, transmission and immune responses toward them.

The candidate is expected to have a solid background in quantitative science. Experiences with optical tweezers or single-molecule fluorescence are strongly preferred. The successful candidate is expected to use quantitative and analytical skills to advantage, pay attention to details, and be an independent thinker. The University of Michigan is internationally renowned for its excellent academics. The university is located in Ann Arbor, a city with culturally diverse community and many fine restaurants. Convenient access to major international airport (DTW) from the campus is just 30 minutes away. The Cheng Lab is located at the center of the Ann Arbor campus, with convenient walking distance to Life Sciences Institute, Department of Chemistry, and Department of Physics, therefore ideally suited for the development of interdisciplinary research programs.

For more information about Cheng lab, please refer to the website at http://www.umich.edu/~chenglab/. Individuals who are interested in this position should send a cover letter, stating their career objectives and research interests, together with their CV, including names & contact details of three references to Prof. Cheng at chengwe@umich.edu, and indicate “Postdoc Application” in the subject of their emails.

The University of Michigan is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
