Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home of three Nobel laureates, is an independent, nonprofit research institution dedicated to the development and advancement of biomedical research to eliminate cancer and other potentially fatal diseases. Recognized internationally for its pioneering work in bone-marrow transplantation, the Center’s five scientific divisions collaborate to form a unique environment for conducting basic and applied science. The Hutchinson Center, in collaboration with its clinical and research partners, the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s, is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Pacific Northwest. Join us and make a difference!

Responsibilities

A post-doctoral position is available to start immediately within the laboratory of Dr. Kevin Cheung located at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA. The mission of the Cheung laboratory is to discover new ways to detect, prevent, and treat metastatic breast cancer, focusing on the biology of tumor cell clusters. We use ex-vivo ‘tumor organoid models’ a powerful platform to directly study the metastatic process in tissue-like environments, paired with in-vivo studies to study gene function and cell behaviors during metastasis in vivo (Cheung et al. Cell 2013; Nguyen-Ngoc* and Cheung* et al. PNAS 2012). For more details of our recent publications and research interests please visit our website at http://research.fhcrc.org/cheung/en.html

We are looking for talented candidates to drive a project with the following goals:

1) Characterize the cell dynamics of migrating tumor cell clusters.

2) Identify the critical molecules driving invasion of cell clusters.

3) Disrupt candidate genes involved in cell cluster metastasis in vivo.

4) Develop strategies for anti-metastatic therapy using primary human tumor organoids.

As a post-doctoral research fellow, you will interact closely with Dr. Cheung to develop your own research strategy, execute your experiments independently, and compete successfully for fellowships. Our laboratory is a member of the Translational Research Program in the Division of Public Health Sciences, a highly interdisciplinary environment where you will have the opportunity to interact closely with investigators with expertise in cancer biology, cancer epidemiology, and breast cancer research. In addition, as a post-doctoral research fellow at Fred Hutch you will be able to work closely with our Student/Postdoc Advisory Committee (SPAC) to build your networks with fellow graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and medical fellows at the FHCRC and to help you get the most out of your post-doctoral research experience and help with your future career goals.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must have, or be in the process of completing a Ph.D. and/or M.D. A strong publication record and eligibility and desire to apply for future fellowships are required. The ideal candidate should be proficient in cell biology, microscopy and mouse genetics, and have experience with three-dimensional cell culture models, time-lapse imaging, and in vivo transplantation. We will bring exceptional candidates up to speed in these areas who are highly motivated to learn. In order to be considered, applicants should submit a cover letter detailing the candidate’s motivation for this position and long-term career goals, curriculum vitae including a list of publications and the names and contact information for at least three references.
