Postdoctoral and PhD Student Positions in Biophysics : Marburg, Germany

The Max Planck Research Group of Knut Drescher is looking for postdocs and PhD students in biophysics, to start in the fall/winter of 2015 or early 2016. The lab is located at the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology in Marburg, Germany. The lab is also a part of the Department of Physics of the University of Marburg.

The research will use new microscopy and imaging techniques, as well as image processing and theoretical methods, to analyze physical and dynamical processes in multicellular bacterial communities known as “biofilms”. Bacterial biofilms play an important role in infections and medical environments, because they are inherently resistant to antibiotics. Cells within biofilms also display the most basic cellular differentiation reminiscent of higher organisms, which makes them an excellent model for studying fundamental aspects of multicellular behaviors.

Physicists with experimental or theoretical backgrounds are welcome, and projects can be adapted to the interests of the PhD student/postdoc.

The Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology and the neighboring University of Marburg form one of the largest clusters of bacteriology research in Europe and offer a stimulating and interdisciplinary research environment with facilities for advanced light microscopy (confocal, super-resolution, FRET, FRAP, FCS,FLIM, TIRF), automated and high-throughput microscopy, and robotics.

As an equal opportunity employer, the Max Planck Society is committed to employing more individuals with disabilities. We therefore actively encourage individuals with disabilities to apply. We also seek to increase the percentage of female employees in areas where they are under-represented. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply.

Please include your CV, a short statement on why you want to join the lab, and the names and contact details of academic referees.Applications will be reviewed on September 6th, 2014, but applications are considered after this date until the positions are filled.
