Postdoctoral Scientist – Stem Cell-Derived Kidney Models for Drug Discovery and Safety

Who we are
Basel is the headquarters of the Roche Group and one of its most important centres of pharmaceutical research. Over 9,500 people from approximately 90 countries work in Basel, which is one of Roche`s largest sites.

Roche is an equal opportunity employer and strictly prohibits unlawful discrimination based upon an individual’s race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, national origin/ancestry, mental/physical disability, medical condition, marital status, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

The Position

  • We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to perform independent research to derive renal tubules from human pluripotent stem cells for applications in our mechanistic safety group.
  • Particularly, we are interested in combining genetic and pharmacological approaches to generate self-renewable renal precursors and mature proximal tubule epithelial cells exhibiting key cellular functions and drug responses.
  • We are interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying renal differentiation, maturation and drug-induced nephrotoxicity.
  • Finally, we apply stem cell research to other pre-clinically relevant species to address species differences and in vivo/ in vitro translatability.

Who you are
You’re someone who wants to influence your own development. You’re looking for a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions and geographies. Where a job title is not considered the final definition of who you are, but the starting point.

  • Ph.D. degree in cell biology, stem cell biology, developmental biology or related area.
  • Extensive experience with human cell culture, ideally primary and pluripotent stem cells.
  • Excellent skills in immunostaining, confocal imaging and image analysis.
  • Know-how in genetic manipulation by gene editing and siRNA-mediated gene knock down.
  • Good understanding of cell differentiation and lineage commitment. Knowledge of renal development and function is an advantage.
  • Independent research skills such as designing, executing and interpreting experiments, as demonstrated by previous publications.
  • Outstanding communication skills, strong passion and commitment
to science and work well within a group.
  • Fluent in English.
