Postdoctoral Scholar – Electric Grid Research – Berkeley Energy and Climate Institute

The Berkeley Energy and Climate Institute (BECI) in conjunction with the California Institute for Energy and Environment (CIEE) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position in Electric Grid Research beginning July, 2015.

BECI-CIEE conducts and coordinates energy research in the public interest. Based at the University of California, Berkeley campus, BECI-CIEE connects teams of leading researchers with federal and state-funded projects to solve energy challenges through new ideas and technologies. A primary focus area of the Electric Grid Research group at BECI-CIEE is the integration of intermittent and distributed generation. Current projects center on the use of high-precision micro-synchrophasors (μPMUs) for increased observation of power distribution systems, including the development of applications for μPMU data in electric utility planning and operations. More broadly, BECI-CIEE aims to support energy sustainability by bringing increased efficiency and intelligence to the electric power sector.

The successful candidate will assist the Electric Grid Research team with ongoing projects through research, writing, and participation in professional meetings. An early focus area for this position will be the demonstration of diagnostic algorithms with empirical μPMU data. The successful candidate will conduct analysis, coordinate and co-supervise graduate students, prepare deliverable reports and academic papers. He or she will also have the opportunity to help shape future research efforts, and will be expected to participate in proposal writing. In addition to quantitative analysis and programming, this position requires oral and written communication in English, interpersonal skills, the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, thorough organization, coordination and appropriate prioritization of multiple tasks.

Basic/minimum qualifications:
PhD or equivalent is required by the start date. At the time of application, the basic minimum qualification is the completion of all degree requirements except the dissertation or equivalent in electrical engineering or a related discipline.

Additional preferred qualifications:
• Understanding of electric power systems from a scientific, engineering, operational and economic perspective
• Vision and analytic skills applied to technological innovation in the electric grid.
• Demonstrated ideas for improving the electric grid infrastructure and the demonstrated ability
to apply techniques to meaningful problems.
• Ability to create, analyze and validate distribution circuit modes
• Ability to perform statistical analysis
• Ability to interpret data related to electric generation, transmission, distribution and demand

This is a one-year full-time (100%) position with a starting salary dependent on qualifications. To apply, submit your curriculum vitae, a cover letter, and contact information for three references to http://apptrkr.com/623404.

Letters of recommendation are not required at this time. If requested, all letters of reference will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and California state law. Please refer potential referees, including when letters are provided via a third party (i.e., dossier service or career center), to the UC Berkeley statement of confidentiality (http://apo.berkeley.edu/evalltr.html) prior to submitting their letters.

The initial review date is July 1, 2015. Please apply by this date to receive full consideration. Applications will continue to be accepted and reviewed until the position is filled. Please address inquiries to info@beci.berkeley.edu at the University of California Berkeley.
