Department Description
Biotechnology and Bioengineering Department, located in Livermore, California and Emeryville, CA, performs biological and bioengineering research with applications in national security, healthcare and alternative energy. We are an interdisciplinary research group with a focus on both basic and applied biological research. One of our goals is to address problems with strong ties to national security, such as biodefense and health security, through advanced technology development and new research approaches. For example, we are one of the world-leaders in application of microfluidic technology for biochemical analysis. An additional goal is to develop the science base required by industry to produce clean, efficient, and cost-effective biofuels on a commercial scale. This work is carried out in partnership with the Department of Energy's Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI). The department is highly multidisciplinary and is comprised of researchers with expertise in many disciplines of biology (molecular biology, microbiology, immunology and biochemistry), chemistry (analytical and physical) and engineering (chemical, mechanical and bioengineering).

Job Description
Postdoctoral Appointee

Job Summary
The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management's discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments.

Required
Requires a recent doctorate in chemistry, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical engineering, or related discipline (e.g., molecular biology, analytical chemistry). Strong preference will be for candidates who are highly skilled in the areas of assay development, molecular diagnostics (nucleic acid-based), and microfluidics. The candidate must have direct, hands-on experience in the following areas: design and development of microfluidic devices, development of lateral flow assays, nucleic acid primer design, nucleic acid analysis (e.g., qPCR, end-point PCR), proper handling of BSL-2 agents, processing of biological samples, and rigorous method validation.

The candidate must be a strong individual contributor within a multidisciplinary team comprising engineers, biologists, chemists, and programmers, within the framework of a milestone-driven research project. Strong written and oral communication skills are required. A demonstrated record of high technical achievement (e.g. as evidenced by publication in high-impact scientific journals) and the demonstrated ability to conduct creative, independent research is required.
