Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home of three Nobel laureates, is an independent, non-profit research institution dedicated to the development and advancement of biomedical research to eliminate cancer and other potentially fatal diseases. Recognized internationally for its pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation, the Center's five scientific divisions collaborate to form a unique environment for conducting basic and applied science. Fred Hutch, in collaboration with its clinical and research partners, the University of Washington and Seattle Children's Hospital, is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Pacific Northwest. Join us and make a difference!

A laboratory in the Clinical Research Division that studies stem cell biology and gene therapy is recruiting a Statistical Research Associate III with experience in bioinformatics and statistical programming.

Responsibilities

The Statistical Research Associate III will be involved in developing and disseminating analysis methods for a variety of data, including retrovirus insertion sites in various species genomes, mutational analyses, genetics and transcriptomics. The integrative analysis of such multimodal and high-dimensional data requires specialized information systems and specific statistical methodologies. The platform aims both to provide scientists with an expert in analytical support and to devise innovative bioinformatics and biostatistics tools.

The lab is seeking an individual specializing in the analysis of genetic and genomic data produced with high-throughput sequencing technologies. He/she will be involved in:

• Providing methodological advice and expert assistance in the design, interpretation and visualization of studies

• Defining and implementing standardized procedures for QC and first level analysis

• Selecting and developing specialized computer tools and graphical user interfaces for data handling and analysis

• Contributing to the scientific and technological watch and evolution of the platform

• Communicating scientific results and offering training in analysis methods and software

Qualifications

The successful applicant should hold a MSc-level degree in bioinformatics/biostatistics and at least three years of related experience. Previous experience in genome data analysis of higher eukaryotes is preferred but not required.

He/she will have the following skills:

• Hands-on expertise of methods and tools for analyzing high-throughput genetic and genomic data: QC, normalization, etc.

• Mastering the main genome database resources

• Proficiency in UNIX environments and programming languages (PERL scripting language, R, and relational database query languages are preferred)

• Fluent in written and spoken English

The ideal candidate will be autonomous, rigorous, self-motivated and eager to take the initiative. He/she will demonstrate writing, communication, teamwork and interpersonal abilities, and will be comfortable handling multiple projects in a multidisciplinary environment.
