Postdoctoral Researcher in Organic Bioelectronics (Theory and Modelling) : Norrköping, Sweden

Postdoctoral Researcher in Organic Bioelectronics (Theory and Modelling)
at Linköping University (Sweden)

A postdoctoral research position will be available at the Department of Science and Technology (ITN), Linköping University (Campus Norrköping), Sweden starting in late summer/fall 2015. The postdoctoral fellow will be a member of the Laboratory of Organic Electronics, http://fe.itn.liu.se/orgel. The research staff of the Laboratory currently consists of 6 faculty members, 14 postdocs, and 17 Ph.D. students. Research areas include Printed electronics, Organic bioelectronics, Organic Solid State devices, Organic Photonics and Theory and Modelling.

Background and duties:
Organic Bioelectronics is a field of research that brings together biology and electronics. It aims to leverage the ionic and electronic signals for directly interfacing with biological cells and tissue, with the ultimate goal of fully incorporating organic “iontronic” circuitry within living organisms. Today, there are a variety of bioelectronics devices with various functionality including artificial implants with electrodes stimulating the nervous system, organic electrochemical transistors and ionic pumps providing a local delivery from an implanted device, various sensors monitoring molecular, ionic and single cell activity. All these devices require bio-compatible materials that can interlink the ionic flow in a biological system with an electronic current in the electrodes. Among all organic materials, conducting polymers, in particular, PEDOT, have become the material of choice for many bioelectronics applications. Despite of the significant experimental activity in the field, many of the aspects of the morphology, structure and ion dynamics in these materials still remain controversial or poorly understood and are practically unexplored theoretically. The aim of the research project will be to model the morphology of realistic PEDOT thin films and ionic diffusion by means of the molecular dynamics simulations and ab initio approaches. The research will be performed in the Theory and Modelling group under supervision of Prof. Igor Zozoulenko. A close interaction with the Organic bioelectronics group (Prof. Magnus Berggren and Dr. Daniel Simon) is expected.

Qualifications:
The applicant must have, or be about to receive a doctoral degree in a subject relevant to the research project (e.g. physics, applied physics, quantum chemistry, biophysics, etc.) and need to be passionate about research. Problem solving ability and creativity, as well as the ability to work independently are essential. Another prerequisite is knowledge and good skills in programming (e.g. C++, Fortran, etc.). Experience with the molecular dynamics calculations and/or ab initio calculations is desirable.

Appointment:
initially for one year with possibility of extension for a second year depending on mutual agreement and performance. Starting time is late summer/fall 2015. The fellowship amounts to SEK25000:-/month (tax-free) (~€2500/month).

Application procedure:
The application should be sent electronically to Prof. Igor Zozouenko (igor.zozoulenko@liu.se) with a subject line "postdoc Organic Bioelectronics". Applications will be continuously evaluated started from May 13; the closing date is May 31. The application should include a cover letter, a CV (with names of two references), a publication list, and other documents you may wish to refer to. (All abovementioned documents should be preferentially sent as a single pdf-file). In addition, maximum of three selected publications can be enclosed with the application….
