Postdoctoral Training Fellowship : London, United Kingdom

Postdoctoral Training Fellowship
Synthetic Biology: Reverse Engineering the Cytoskeleton

This is a full-time, fixed term position of 4 years on Crick Terms and Conditions of Employment.
Salary between £33,500 to £36,500 per annum

Context

The Francis Crick institute (the Crick) is a partnership between the Medical Research Council (MRC), Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the Wellcome Trust, University College London (UCL), Imperial College London and Kings College London. It is a registered charity whose purpose is to conduct biomedical research into all aspects of human health and disease.

The institute will be a world-leading centre of biomedical research and innovation. It will promote connections between researchers and disciplines and between academic institutions, healthcare organisations and businesses. Dedicated to research excellence, the institute will have the scale, vision and expertise to tackle the most challenging scientific questions underpinning health and disease. It will be world-class with a strong national role—training scientists and developing ideas for public good. Due to open in November 2015, The Crick will be located in a new, purpose built research centre in central London (Brill Place next to St. Pancras International) and will house some 1,250 researchers and 250 support staff.

The position of Postdoctoral Training Fellow in Synthetic Biology: Reverse Engineering the Cytoskeleton has been created to contribute towards ERC-funded research using synthetic in vitro reconstitution and microfluidics approaches to understand cytoskeleton function.

Organisation

The post holder will be a member of the laboratory on 'Synthetic and systems biochemistry of the microtubule cytoskeleton' led by Thomas Surrey.

Objectives

The research aims to understand the design principles of the self-organising microtubule cytoskeleton. In this project, microfluidic control will be essential to perform biochemical reactions in controlled micro-environments such as droplets and liposomes to mimic cellular constraints imposed on cytoskeleton morphology by the plasma membrane.

Specific objectives will include, but not limited to:

• Develop microfluidic tools for controlled mixing of protein solutions and for the preparation of liposomes
• Develop miniaturised assays for the fluorescence microscopy-based observation of self-organising biochemical systems in vitro mimicking natural cytoskeleton architecture and function

Person Specification#

The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: Bold, Imaginative, Open, Dynamic and Collegiate, in addition to the following:

Essential

• A PhD or in final stages of completing a PhD in biophysics, bioengineering, biochemistry or related field.
• Extensive expertise in microfluidics
• Basic knowledge of molecular biology and protein biochemistry
• At least one first authorship in a peer-reviewed international publication
• Ability to work independently, creativity and good communication skills.
Desirable

• Experience with fluorescence microscopy
• Experience with surface chemistry
• Good understanding of membrane and cytoskeleton biochemistry/biophysics
