The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. We provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, laying the foundation for the now universally accepted idea that cancer is a genetic disease. Today, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) leads the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment. Under the leadership of our Chief Executive, Professor Paul Workman FMedSci, the ICR is ranked as the UK’s leading academic research centre. Together with our partner The Royal Marsden, we are rated in the top four cancer centres globally. The ICR is committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best minds in the world to join us in our mission – to make the discoveries that defeat cancer.

Immunoprofiling of Thyroid Cancer

We are looking for a highly motivated and talented scientist to join the Targeted Therapy Team lead by Professor Kevin Harrington at the Institute of Cancer Research in London.

The primary goal of the study is to immune profile different subsets of thyroid cancers using in vitro assays, in vivo models and patient samples. Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy and incidence rates have increased overall in UK since the mid-1970 and continue to rise rapidly worldwide. The aim of the project is to study, systematically, how tumour-targeting agents and tumour genotypes can condition the susceptibility of tumour cells to cell killing by immune cells and to characterize the mechanisms used by cancer cells to hinder tumour specific immune responses. We work in close collaboration with the Royal Marsden Hospital and St Georges Hospital in London and this project involves studies on combining small molecules and immune checkpoint modulators as therapeutic strategies for patients with thyroid cancers. Our research includes the development and use of orthotopic in vivo models for preclinical and translational studies of targeted therapies and immunotherapies for advanced thyroid cancers as well as identification of biomarkers for response to therapy. This is an exciting area in thyroid cancer biology, which has not yet been explored, and it is a great opportunity to make a difference to the future medical science.

Within the laboratory and ICR you will get guidance and knowledge from cancer biology and translational studies experts and you will be included in programs to develop your career. You are expected to publish in leading journals and present your data in internal and external meetings. This is an ideal opportunity for a committed and enthusiastic scientist to join a dynamic research team with excellent collaborators and facilities at a highly recognised institute.

Applicants will hold a PhD in Tumour Biology, Immunology or a similar discipline. We are looking for candidates that have a significant knowledge in immune cell biology and immune cell activation and function assays. Hands-on experience in flow cytometry analysis of cell phenotype and function is essential. Experience in immunohistochemistry and microscopy is essential and multiplex immunofluorescence and image analysis experience would be advantageous as it is prior working experience with in vivo models. Applicants must have good laboratory and analytical skills with experience in working in a collaborative environment. Candidates should be capable of working independently, be ambitious and driven to achieve goals and are expected to have at least one first author peer reviewed publication.

This appointment is offered on a fixed term contract of 12 months in the first instance with a full salary scale within the range of £28,966 p.a. to £41,400 p.a. inclusive. Starting salary will be up to £39,186 p.a. inclusive based on previous postdoctoral experience.
