Our Company:

GlaxoSmithKline Vaccines (GSK Vaccines), the vaccine division of the GSK Group, is one of the world’s leading vaccine manufacturers, supplying around 25% of the world’s vaccines, at the cutting edge of vaccine research, development and production. Headquartered in Belgium, GSK Vaccines employs over 11,000 people worldwide, of which 7,500 in its three Belgian sites: Rixensart, Wavre and Gembloux. GSK Vaccines’ global production network is in the midst of becoming the largest in the entire vaccines industry; 15 production sites strategically positioned around the world manufacture, formulate, fill, pack, check and deliver over a billion doses of about 30 different vaccines. Vaccines GSK Global Industrial Operations is primarily based in Belgium (6000+ employees) with satellites in France, Hungary, Singapore, Canada, US, Germany, China, Russia and India. Those figures will continue to grow, as GSK is planning to acquire the Vaccines division of Novartis in 2015.

The department:

Our Research & Development department gives our business its competitive edge, both in improving the quality of existing GSK vaccines and in generating ideas and concepts for innovative new products.
Our R&D process seeks to push boundaries while taking a realistic approach to technology, partnerships, and using available resources wisely. We also emphasise the value of teamwork and responsibility in developing new vaccines.
The department undertakes research in four disease areas: Viral & Allergy Vaccines, Bacterial Vaccines, Emerging Diseases & HIV, and Cancer Vaccines. A substantial proportion of our R&D programme is oriented towards controlling diseases that hit the poorest countries hardest.
Clinical studies are currently being carried out to assess the efficacy of vaccines against TB, HIV/AIDS, and malaria, while vaccines for dengue and other developing world diseases are at an earlier stage of development.
For this department we are looking for scientists with a doctorate or post-doctoral qualification in life sciences, and ideally experience in virology, immunology or molecular biology.
You should have a keen interest in staying abreast of the latest developments in global healthcare. We are also interested in receiving applications from people with the drive, motivation and leadership skills to manage laboratory-based teams.

Job Purpose

• The position is created as part of a collaboration between GlaxoSmithKline Vaccines (GSK) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). This collaboration aims to take an integrated systems biology approach to transcriptomics data as well as immunological, and clinical data collected in different clinical studies.
• Furthering our understanding of human immunology and vaccine mode of action is expected to advance the malaria and tuberculosis vaccine programs. The candidate will be offered a 2.5 year GSK Belgium contract as a postdoctoral researcher (postdoc), and will closely collaborate with other postdocs in the same program, GSK scientists, BMGF scientists, and leading scientists in systems vaccinology.
• The successful candidate has a PhD or similar work experience in the field of data analysis and method development (statistics, chemometrics, psychometrics, machine learning, bioinformatics).
• With this expertise, the candidate will analyze immunological and gene expression data collected in tuberculosis and malaria clinical studies aimed at improving our understanding of the development of the immune response, the impact of pre-existing immunity on vaccination and vaccine safety.
While based at the GSK R&D site in Rixensart, the candidate will spend 3 to 9 months in the United States to develop expertise with B-cell immunology and transcriptomics data analysis and interpretation.

Our offer: 2,5 year contract

We offer the successful candidate the opportunity to work on a challenging project in the globally leading vaccine company with a competitive salary, in collaboration with fellow postdocs, internationally renowned scientists, and a major global philanthropic organization to work on improving malaria and tuberculosis vaccines. The candidate will have the opportunity to gain international experience, to develop collaborative and leadership skills, and to obtain expertise in systems vaccinology, human immunology, and gene expression data analysis….
