Department Description
The Component Science and Mechanics Department (1526) conducts frontier mechanics research and science-based engineering solutions for component development and assessment. Focus areas for the department include interfacial and micro/nano-mechanics, probabilistic mechanics and uncertainty quantification, and mechanical aspects of component and subsystem reliability. Areas of active interest include: interconnects and encapsulation, fatigue and fracture, energy dissipation at contacts, micro-structural mechanics, shock and vibration, crack initiation and propagation, micro-scale diagnostics, and adaptive structures. Computational and physical simulations, including solid mechanics and structural dynamics for both linear and non-linear systems, are utilized in a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment.

Job Description
Postdoctoral Appointee

Job Summary
Department 1526 is looking for a highly motivated and productive individual to work in a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment with a focus on structural dynamics experimental research. This is a growth opportunity to help build a new research program, with a lot of discretion in work directions. The individual's work portfolio would be expected to cover a full spectrum of work spanning the entire research - development - applications domain. There are significant opportunities to team with in-house (high-fidelity multi-physics) computational teams and large-scale test systems. The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management's discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments. Extensions of up to six years require employee's manager approval. Six years or greater requires employee's manager and HR VP approval.

Required
--Completion of a PhD in a relevant field, such as mechanical or aerospace engineering with a strong academic record (at least 3.2/4.0 GPA for undergraduate work and a 3.5/4.0 GPA for graduate work). --Experience (or academic focus) in the area of structural dynamics, mechanical vibrations, or modal analysis. --Laboratory experience, including e.g. use of vibration shakers, accelerometers, data acquisition systems, and laser Doppler velocimetry. --Position requires ability and willingness for some travel. --The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE security clearance.

Desired
--A 3.5/4.0 or better GPA for undergraduate work and a 3.7/4.0 or better GPA for graduate work is preferred. --Candidate should be able to work independently, with the ability to integrate effectively into a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment. --This individual must demonstrate strong interpersonal, organization, and communication skills (both oral and written), as evidenced by a strong publication and presentation record. --A demonstrated commitment to engineering excellence and continuous improvement, including a dedication to performing high quality work safely. --Demonstrated leadership skills and experience working in a collaborative environment within a multidisciplinary team. --Experience with Matlab and LMS Test Lab is desirable. --Experience with mechanical design is desirable, and experience on projects including design-build-test is a plus. --Experience with designing, conducting, and/or interpreting data from dynamic mechanical tests. --An active DOE clearance is highly desired.

Security Clearance
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted Q-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.

Benefits
At Sandia you will receive many benefits as a valued employee of a premier national multi-program engineering and science research laboratory. In our Total Rewards package you will enjoy competitive pay, great benefits, a stimulating, positive environment and learning opportunities that will help build your career. More information may be found on our Careers website.

EEO
Sandia National Laboratories is an Equal Opportunity Employer of qualified women, minorities, individuals with disabilities and protected veterans.
