摘要:

A PhD position/postdoctoral position is available at Johann Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science and the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences in the Mathematics for Planet Earth project 'Killing two birds with one stone: simultaneous estimation and selection of species diversification models' awarded to Prof. Ernst C. Wit and Prof. Rampal S. Etienne. In this project, we propose to develop new model reduction techniques to identify the essential dynamics in ecological communities and make sound statistical inference on these dynamics from phylogenetic data. Our approach consists of a combination of data augmentation and inference. It will, so to say, kill two birds with one stone: solving a hard optimization problem and performing model selection simultaneously. This project involves a direct collaboration between mathematics and evolutionary community ecology, which makes dissemination of the computational tools as software package a core objective of the project itself.

If you are interested in the PhD position, then we are looking for someone who holds either a master degree in statistics, mathematics, theoretical or mathematical biology. For the postdoctoral position, we are looking for someone with a PhD degree in statistics or theoretical biology.
