Assistant Professor in Developmental Biology of Health and Disease : Ottawa, Canada

Department of Health Sciences (Developmental Biology of Health and Disease) – Assistant Professor (Applications Closing Date: February 15, 2015)

The Department of Health Sciences invites applications from qualified candidates for a Tenure-track appointment in Developmental Biology of Health and Disease at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2015.

Carleton is increasing its research and teaching activities in health studies and sciences, drawing on many existing strengths from across a range of disciplines. This Assistant-level faculty position affords the opportunity to build collaborations amongst existing strengths to enhance the Department’s broad, integrated, and innovative approach to health-related education and research.

Areas of particular interest for this position in the Developmental Biology of Health and Disease include mechanism(s) of genetic, epigenetic or cellular regulation of human development and the developmental basis of health and pathology, including metabolic, genetic or chronic diseases. Use of animal models and integration of lifespan approaches as well as interest in child/maternal health, environmental influences or infectious disease will be considered an advantage. Applicants are expected to demonstrate interest and/or experience with broadly interdisciplinary collaborations including, but not limited to health sciences. Research with a translational component and experience collaborating with stakeholders in industry, government, community and/or clinical settings are sought for this position.

The new Bachelors of Health Sciences (BHSc) and the Health: Science, Technology and Policy (HSTP) graduate programs, both housed within the Department of Health Sciences, illustrate the opportunities available in this area of growth and strategic importance at Carleton. Both are broadly trans-disciplinary programs that leverage expertise from multiple disciplines to engage students and external partners to translate research findings into real world solutions and provide training relevant to the rapidly changing health sector.

Developing research themes of the Department of Health Sciences include:
• Lifespan perspective of health and disease
• Inflammatory, infectious and chronic disease
• Global health and environmental factors influencing health
• Health of vulnerable populations

The successful candidate will be someone prepared to transition into a leadership role in the BHSc program by contributing to student advising and the development of the undergraduate experience and curriculum. The Department of Health Sciences is housed in the Faculty of Science but is campus-wide in its reach. This represents a tremendous opportunity for leading the development of health-related research and education that is truly interdisciplinary in nature and with strong ties into the broader community.

Job requirements include a Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline and postdoctoral or other relevant experience. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a productive, internationally-recognized research program, supported by extramural funding, that fosters institutional collaborations in health-focused research, as well as providing effective instruction and advising to a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students. A decided interest and demonstrated capacity for collaboration across disciplines and with external partners is fundamental to this position. Given its location in the National Capital Region, Carleton has strong ties to government and community agencies. This position is expected to contribute significantly to strengthening these relations to facilitate research partnerships, as well as expand opportunities for student engagement.

The deadline for applications is February 15, 2015.

Please indicate in your application if you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
