PhD Scholarship in Socio-Legal Studies

University of Sheffield - School of Law

Sheffield University Law School, a leading research institution ranked 10th in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), is offering a postgraduate research scholarship for an excellent student who wishes to commence their PhD in autumn 2015. The scholarship is available to an ambitious candidate with strong qualifications who will make a significant contribution to the intellectual life of the School.

The scholarship, funded by the ESRC, is for a social science based research project concerned with the social, political and economic influences on, and impact of, the law and the legal system. Information about the areas of research supervision offered by the School of Law is provided atwww.sheffield.ac.uk/law/study/researchdegrees/researchsupervision.

An application for a place of study should be submitted before applying for a scholarship (seewww.sheffield.ac.uk/law/study/researchdegrees/howtoapplyphd). Details of the scholarships available are given at www.sheffield.ac.uk/law/study/researchdegrees/scholarships/home.

Scholarship holders will normally need a first degree that is equivalent in standard to a UK classification of Upper Second-Class Honours or better, as well as a good Masters level qualification or equivalent experience. However, for this particular scholarship, students without a Masters level qualification or equivalent experience can request a ‘1+3’ award which will cover the costs of undertaking a Masters programme.

In certain circumstances, students will be considered with other qualifications where these provide reassurance of the capacity to undertake high quality research.

If applicants’ first language is not English and they have not studied at degree level in English before, a qualification in English such as IELTS minimum of 7.0 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each component) will be required.

Queries should be directed to the Postgraduate Admissions Tutor - pgradlaw@sheffield.ac.uk

The type of ESRC scholarship awarded is based on an applicant's residency status. UK and EU applicants who have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years immediately preceding the start of their course are eligible for the full scholarship.

This pays:

  • the standard UK/EU tuition fees; and
  • an annual, tax-free maintenance stipend at the standard UK research rate (£13,863 in 2014-15).

In addition, scholarship holders will have access to Research Training Support Grant funds to support conference and other expenses and may apply for additional funding to support overseas fieldwork, language training and overseas institutional visits.

‘1+3’ awards will, in addition to the above, pay the standard UK/EU tuition fees and a maintenance award for a Masters programme.
