Department Description
The Computational Materials and Data Science Department provides advanced computational analysis that enables materials-based insight and solutions. Capabilities include model development for nanoscalar and mesoscalar materials evolution, interfacial dynamics, defect initiation and propagation, multivariate analysis, and signal processing. We conduct experiments in micromechanics and volumetric flaw distribution to validate our computational work. Our multidisciplinary background and materials science expertise enable mechanistic and physical understanding related to aging and wear of materials such as metals, semiconductors, biomaterials, and polymers in support of DOE nuclear and non-nuclear missions.

Job Description
Postdoctoral Appointee

Job Summary
The Computational Materials and Data Science department has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral appointment focused on three-dimensional materials characterization. Job responsibilities include customizing, operating, and analyzing data output from an automated serial-sectioning system and applying various image and data processing techniques to produce three-dimensional reconstructions. Appointee will also combine materials processing knowledge to provide recommendations for additional or complementary testing to provide clearer understanding of material properties and microstructural arrangements. Research emphases include but are not limited to; metals and ceramics. A primary emphasis for the post-doctoral appointment will be to combine existing three-dimensional reconstruction techniques with secondary data collection methods (e.g. EBSD, EDS) and/or utilize the collected 3d datasets as inputs for modeling and simulation. The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management's discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments. Extensions of up to six years require employee's manager approval. Six years or greater requires employee's manager and HR VP approval.

Required
-- PhD in Materials Science & Engineering or related Science & Engineering fields. --Background in materials science and engineering, metallurgy, and image processing.

Desired
--Candidate must possess strong technical writing skills and the ability to communicate findings both verbally and visually. --While experience in a specific programming language is not required, some programming experience would be helpful. --A basic understanding of materials processing beyond metallurgy would also be useful. --Candidate must demonstrate the ability to collaborate across a variety of research areas and be able to cultivate working relationships with others.

Security Clearance
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted Q-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.

Benefits
At Sandia you will receive many benefits as a valued employee of a premier national multi-program engineering and science research laboratory. In our Total Rewards package you will enjoy competitive pay, great benefits, a stimulating, positive environment and learning opportunities that will help build your career. More information may be found on our Careers website.
