摘要:
The Centre for mathematical Plasma Astrophysics (CmPA) of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) accepts applications for one post-doctoral position within the framework of the DEEP-ER project funded by the European Commission within the FP7 program (deep-er.eu). DEEP-ER involves 13 project partners from 7 European countries, including the supercomputing centers in Juelich and Barcelona. KU Leuven's participation in the DEEP-ER project aims for efficient scaling of kinetic plasma simulation on emerging massively parallel architectures.  A specific goal is to efficiently occupy the Many-Integrated-Core (MIC) units on the Cluster-Booster supercomputer architecture being developed under DEEP-ER with the task of resolving electron kinetics at scales needed for space weather forecasting.  To ensure that computation is not dominated by other tasks, efficient parallel I/O and task-based resiliency are being developed in addition to improvements in computation parallelisation (vectorization, multi-threading, and MPI communication patterns) and improvements in the kinetic algorithm itself.

Description

The researchers will have access to large parallel computing facilities and to a stimulating research environment within the CmPA. The researchers will be employed by KU Leuven, but collaborations with other computing and plasma simulation centers is encouraged. The work place is Leuven, a historic university town (our university is one of the oldest in Europe, founded in 1425) located just 20 minutes from the center of Brussels and 15 minutes from Brussels international airport, making it easily reachable to international travelers. Leuven is an international city located in the Flemish (Dutch speaking) part of Belgium, where English is spoken routinely in all places (from University and public offices to shops and entertainment venues). Candidates will take over the lead of the tasks assigned to KU Leuven within the DEEP-ER project but will also have the freedom to pursue other research projects within the domain of high performance computing based on their interests.

Benefits

Employment details:Salary: 24,000-30,000 Euro net salary (depending on qualifications)Duration: One year, renewable after positive evaluation.Application Closing Date: Position will be filled as soon as possible.KU Leuven is committed to equality of opportunity. An application should include:A cover letter expressing the candidate's research background, including a clear indication of the level of expertise in the areas mentioned in the job description above,A curriculum vitae detailing personal information, English language skill, the degrees obtained, and the major research achievements,The names of two contact persons willing to provide a recommendation letter,A complete list of publications listing peer-reviewed publications and other types of scientific communications (clearly distinguish between both),A statement of when you are able to fill the position.

Additional Job Details

Reference number BAP-2014-457 Candidates should demonstrate general understanding of high-performance computing, numerical methods, and plasma modeling and simulation.  The project uses C++ primarily, with some use of python and shell.  Candidates who can demonstrate skill in how to structure and develop code are desired.
