Postdoctoral Research Associate - USDA Agricultural Research Service - Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Molecular Biology, or Genetics - 0051 : Beltsville, MD, United States

A Bioinformaticist position is available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agriculture Research Service (ARS) Genetic Improvement of Fruits and Vegetables Laboratory (GIFVL) in Beltsville, Maryland. The selected applicant will provide bioinformatics support on several projects within the GIFVL. The projects include transcriptome and genome sequence analyses with the goal to identify genes associated with important traits for various fruit and vegetable crops as well as key plant-pathogen interactions.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Applying computational approaches to analyze RNA-Seq expression data
  • Assembling and annotating sequences
  • Developing and applying comparative genomics methods
  • Characterizing and studying novel gene families
  • Developing databases and search tools
  • Submitting sequence data to national repositories

Qualifications

  • To be eligible, applicants must have received a doctorate degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, molecular biology, genetics or a related discipline with significant experience in bioinformatics. The degree must be received within five years of the desired starting date.

Preferred skills include:

  • Training in statistics and genetics
  • Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems
  • Programming experience (Perl/Python/Java)
  • Experience with Rna-seq alignment tools such as bowtie and tophat, and differential expression tools such as degseq
  • Familiarity with CLC Workbench
  • Experience with genome assembly tools, both denovo and reference based
  • While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with ARS, this position requires a pre-employment check and a full background investigation.

Additional Information
The appointment is full-time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of the ARS and availability of funding. The annual stipend rate for this position is $52,146. A stipend supplement in the amount of $5,160 is available to offset the cost of an individual or family health insurance plan. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health insurance may be obtained through ORISE. The participant does not become an employee of the ARS or ORISE.
