Senior Researcher (postdoc) data security / cybersecurity law (m/f)

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Law & ICT (ICRI) is a research centre at the Faculty of Law of KU Leuven. The centre is dedicated to advancing and promoting legal knowledge relating to the information society through research and teaching of the highest quality. ICRI is currently the coordinator of the Belgian Cybercrime Centre of Excellence for Training, Research & Education (www.b-ccentre.be), a multi-disciplinary platform for knowledge exchange, research and education on cybercrime and cybersecurity. ICRI is also among the founding members of the LEUVEN Center on Information and Communication Technology (www.kuleuven.be/LICT/) and iMinds (www.iminds.be). Since the 1st July 2014 ICRI has expanded its scope of activities through a merger with the equally reputed Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (CIR).

The Institute has a strong international focus and is cooperating with leading academic institutions from all across the world. Its close proximity to the European institutions in Brussels, facilitates intellectual exchanges with decision makers at EU level. Responsibilities

The candidate is expected to carry out research in the area of data security, cybersecurity and/or cybercrime law in the context of interdisciplinary projects funded by the European Union under its Research & Innovation programmes (FP7, Horizon 2020) and by other funding agencies at regional, national or international level. He/she is also expected to mentor junior researchers in this area and to coach researchers performing a doctoral research. He/she acts as the centre's contact person for new research proposals in cooperation with interdisciplinary consortia.

The successful candidate is expected to develop and carry forward a research strategy addressing new challenges with regard to legal aspects of ICT security and cybercrime, in close collaboration with the centre's professors and with colleagues from iMinds and B-CCENTRE. A core task of this position is the acquisition of third-party funding facilitating the sustainable development of this research agenda.

The ideal candidate enjoys working with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and actively contributes to the intellectual exchange but also the management and administration of the research unit.

The successful candidate is expected to publish in top-rated journals and open-access outlets and to give presentations at national and international conferences.

There are no teaching obligations attached to this position, but taking up limited lecturing activities within the existing curricula at bachelor, master and advanced master level is possible.

This position is an ideal opportunity for a scholar who wishes to deepen and/or broaden his/her academic expertise in one of the leading research centres in Europe in the field of ICT and IP law.

It allows for the development of an outstanding academic profile that combines empirical and theoretical originality, multidisciplinary perspectives and management expertise on an international level.

Profile

  • You have a PhD (or will complete it within 6 months) in law in the field of data security / (cyber)security / cybercrime or in a closely related domain;
  • You can creatively analyse legal problems in this domain of law and propose clear and valuable solutions in an interdisciplinary context;
  • You have expertise and experience in writing research proposals;
  • You are driven to share your research and knowledge with others through academic publications and through presentations at top-level scientific conferences and workshops;
  • You can translate new research questions in successful project proposals, together with partners from academia, the private sector and government;
  • You have or are willing to build an extensive network in the data security and privacy community;
  • You are an excellent coach for junior researchers;
  • You have good communication and writing skills, particularly in English;
  • You are flexible and can work both independently and in team.
