Job Description
R&D S&E, Biological Science SE

Primary Job Duties
The Research Scientist will be required to establish an independent research program by obtaining research funding and will be expected to design and conduct experiments, supervise research associates and postdoctoral scientists, and author scientific publications. Areas of interest to SNL include the development of molecular diagnostic assays for detection of emerging pathogens; characterization of pathogens using next-generation sequencing methods; and development of methods and procedures to aid in international biosurveillance efforts. The research will require close partnerships with national and international academic and governmental research institutions and will require domestic and international travel.

Required
Candidates should possess a Ph.D. in Virology, Immunology, Epidemiology, or a related discipline, and have demonstrated experience, including a minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral experience, in industry, an R&D institution or a university.
Other required qualifications include: 1) hands-on experience in viral culture, sample preparation, next-generation sequencing, and molecular biology tools, 2) hands-on experience working with human and animal samples for pathogen detection, 3) strong analytical skills, 4) an outstanding publication record, and 5) good communication skills. Successful candidates should be self-motivated and capable of working both as an independent scientist and as an integral member of a team of scientists.

Desired
Experience with one or more is desired: genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic analysis tools, animal model research, clinical sample preparation and molecular diagnostics. Experience with grant proposal writing and project leadership is strongly desired.

Security Clearance
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted Q-level security clearance to start.

This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance before beginning the job responsibilities. If selected and you do not hold an active DOE clearance, your start date will be affected.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.

Benefits
At Sandia you will receive many benefits as a valued employee of a premier national multi-program engineering and science research laboratory. In our Total Rewards package you will enjoy competitive pay, great benefits, a stimulating, positive environment and learning opportunities that will help build your career. More information may be found on our Careers website.
