UCL Institute of Neurology
Queen Square

Senior Research Technician, MNP Laboratory
Sobell Department of Motor Neuroscience & Movement Disorders

Applications are invited for the post of Senior Research Technician to assist and support a team of researchers within the Sobell Department of Motor Neuroscience & Movement Disorders on the development of embryonic stem (ES)-derived cell models of neurodegenerative diseases, in which to study specific aspects of the cellular pathogenesis of motor neuron disease and other neurodegenerative conditions affecting motor neurons and other neuronal types. The post holder will have a central role in the organisation and maintenance of a new ES facility established within the Molecular Neuropathobiology Laboratory (MNP), and will undertake specific projects analysing the molecular and cellular functions of factors involved in neuronal survival and neuronal membrane traffic. S/he will also provide expertise to projects utilising ES-derived neurons in drug discovery and gene pathway analysis, and manage a high-end multiphoton microscope.

Applicants must have a PhD in biology, neuroscience or related subject area (or equivalent experience), and prior experience with cell culture and cell biology (specifically murine or human ES cells), live cell imaging, confocal microscopy and image analysis, and molecular and genetic techniques. S/he must have experience in managing mouse colonies and with regulated procedures and be a Personal Licence Holder. Experience of teaching/supervising students in the laboratory is also required.

The post is available immediately and is funded for a period of two years in the first instance. Starting salary on the UCL Grade 7 scale in the range £32,699 – £39,523 per annum including London Allowance, superannuable.

Closing date: 22 May 2014

We particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates as they are under-represented within UCL at this level.
