Development of Biomolecule-Functionalized Hydrogels as In Vitro Tissue Mimetics : Leuven, Belgium

Occupation : Full-time
Period : Fixed-term contract
Place : Leuven
Apply no later than : May 31, 2014

For the section on Surface and Interface Engineered Materials, we are looking for postdoctoral fellows to develop biomolecule-functionalized hydrogels as in vitro tissue mimetics. Our lab works primarily with synthetic polymers, which we modify to make bioactive and then use to form hydrogels, for a number of applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. One project will focus on the incorporation of newly identified cues into the hydrogels to create in vitro hematopoietic stem cell niches. A second project will focus on novel patterning strategies to control the spatial presentation of bioactive ligands within the hydrogels.

Development of Biomolecule-Functionalized Hydrogels as In Vitro Tissue Mimetics

The primary appointment will be in the Department of Materials Engineering (www.mtm.kuleuven.be/English). The projects will require interaction with other researchers at the KU Leuven in the Stem Cell Institute (http://www.kuleuven.be/samenwerking/scil/), the Biomechanics section of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (https://www.mech.kuleuven.be/en/bme), and Prometheus, the division of skeletal tissue engineering (www.kuleuven.be/prometheus).

Profile

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Materials, Chemical, or Biomedical Engineering or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates with the ability to handle both engineering aspects (biomaterials development and characterization) and biological aspects (cell culture, in vitro screening) of the project. Experience in the areas of polymer chemistry and characterization or peptide synthesis is an advantage but not essential.

Offer

This is a fully funded (salary and benefits) position of 2 years, with possible extension up to 4 years.
