PostDoc (f/m) on using process-based forest models and Bayesian statistics to examine consequences of functional diversity in temperate forests

Scientific profile: The ideal candidate has a PhD and a background that combines ecology or forest sciences with modeling and statistics. While not compulsory, prior experience with forest models (LPJ-GUESS), C/C++ programming, data analysis, Bayesian statistics and functional ecology will be a bonus. We search for a colleague with an appreciation of scientific rigor, a passion for research, and an excellent publication record.

Research task: The position is funded within the framework of the Biodiversity Exploratories, a platform for biodiversity research on three sites across Germany. The PostDoc will use data from these sites to parameterize the LPJ-GUESS ecosystem model, and subsequently test a number of hypotheses regarding resource and niche portioning between the tree species. The project will collaborate with colleagues from the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre in Frankfurt, and there will be ample opportunities for networking and professional interactions beyond this core group through the embedding in the Biodiversity Exploratories and an additional EU COST Action on forest modeling.

Location and working place: Freiburg is a medium size university town in southern Germany. It is generally considered a very attractive place to live in due to its favorable climate, its geographic location, and its cultural and social life. The University of Freiburg, located within walking distance to the city center, harbors an active and international research community in the field of Ecology and Environmental Sciences. More information about the research interests of the Department of Biometry & Environmental System Analysis can be found at http://www.biom.uni-freiburg.de/

Conditions: The position is available for a period of three years. The position is paid according to salary level E 13 (TVL) and is available immediately.

Application: Please address your application (comprising a cover letter explaining your reasons to apply for this position as well as qualifications that you find particularly relevant for this position, a CV, short statement of research interests, and contact details of two or more references) in a single PDF-file to florian.hartig@biom.uni-freiburg.de. Questions can be addressed to Florian Hartig under the same email. An initial selection will be made on 12th of May 2014, but applications will be considered until the position is filled….
