Research Associate in Statistical Physics and Flow in Porous Media

A fixed term post for 36 months

Salary range: £32,750 to £34,500 per annum

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to investigate the application of statistical physics to multi-fluid flows in porous media. The aim of the project is to develop simple relationships to describe the bulk behaviour of multi-phase flow in geologically heterogeneous rocks. These relationships will have general application for important problems such as in estimating the location and distribution of remaining oil in heterogeneous reservoirs, after tertiary Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) and in estimating the volume of CO2 trapped during geological sequestration to mitigate climate change. This 3 year project is funded by Statoil.

You will be working in the internationally leading petroleum engineering research group at Imperial with another post-doctoral researcher (with a petroleum engineering background), in discussion with petroleum reservoir engineers from Statoil. The overall aim of this project is to determine the factors that control the volume and location of unrecovered oil after water-flooding and then different EOR processes such as miscible gas injection, polymer injection and ASP flooding. You will also be expected to regularly publish papers in international refereed journals, and give presentations at relevant international conferences.

Applicants should have completed or be about to obtain a PhD, or equivalent, in statistical physics or a related field. You should also have a background in fluid dynamics and/or porous media flows and experience of writing papers and giving presentations at an international level.

The Department of Earth Science and Engineering is Athena SWAN Silver Award holder. It promotes flexible and family friendly working practices. For more information see our web pages.
